Internship Program

Laramie County Fire District #1 Firefighter Internship Program

Laramie County Fire District #1, in an effort to support post-secondary education and bolster the Fire/EMS response capability of Laramie County, has opened the doors on its new internship program. We are eager to mentor and develop student firefighters while providing them with experiences they cannot receive inside the classroom in a career field they are passionate about. In return for meeting and maintaining certain educational and assignment responsibilities, we are also offering reimbursement of some or all of their fire science course tuition.

Requirements:

  • Accepted and enrolled in an fire science program at an accredited college.
  • Pass a Combat Physical Assessment Test administered by Laramie County Fire District #1 Cadre.
  • Pass a written civil service test administered by Laramie County Fire District #1 Cadre.
  • Pass an oral evaluation board administered by Laramie County Fire District #1 leadership.
  • Be approved by current Chief and Assistant Chief of Laramie County Fire District #1.
  • Once approved, the member must participate in and pass the Laramie County Fire District #1 recruit academy.

Conditions:

To remain in the Internship Program, interns must maintain at least a 2.5 overall Grade Point Average in all classes. This includes non-fire science courses required for degree completion by your post-secondary institution. This GPA standard will be reviewed at the end of each semester.

Interns will be assigned to a duty shift. Currently, Laramie County Fire District #1 operates on 3 shifts each lasting 48 continuous hours. The intern will participate on the shift they are assigned. If they are unable to do so they must find another qualified firefighter to take their place for the portion of their shift they cannot attend. This will be done with the approval of the Shift Captain.

Furthermore, a formal review will be completed by the Chief at the end of each semester wherein there will be feedback on the intern’s performance, the aforementioned review of GPA, and the discussion of which classes will be taken in the next semester and which are qualified to be paid for by this program.

At any time, for any reason, Laramie County Fire District #1 retains the right to dissolve this contract and remove the intern from the program and remove them as a member of Laramie County Fire District #1’s staff. This decision will only take place with directive from the Chief or Assistant Chief.

Finally, should at any time the intern decide to withdraw from their agreed upon fire science program, they are still eligible for volunteer status within Laramie County Fire District #1. The approval for this change of role within the department will be held by the Chief.

Benefits:

  • Tuition reimbursement for Fire Science-related courses agreed upon by the Chief or the Chief’s internship program delegate.
  • On the job training in fire and EMS skills with the busiest fire district in Laramie County.
  • State and Department Sponsored Classes and, if achieved, certifications are available as they are for the volunteers; at no cost to the participant of the class.
  • Many certifications within Wyoming are eligible to be certified by the Pro Board ® system. Once Pro Board ®  certified, your Fire certificates are more likely to be accepted as for transfer in 31 states and 5 provinces, making transferring without having to start from the beginning in your certifications easier in future endeavors.
